UMOLJANI VILLAGE

You will hear a very interesting legend. And villagers have some proof about this legend. This village is finally free of a dragon. Based on that legend this village is named.

LUKOMIR VILLAGE

At 1469 masl (4820 ft), the village of Lukomir is the highest and most isolated village in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Way of living have stayed unchanged for along time. It is situated on mountain Bjelasnica, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Sarajevo. Lukomir is a symbol of historical, cultural, architectural and ambient heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Traditional medieval Bosnian highlender's lifestyle are still practiced here. In the beginning there was just the village Donji Lukomir, 10 kilometers from the Lukomir that coexists today. Around the year 1950 people of this village have displaced their homes because of avalanches.

Lukomir has unique stone homes with cherry-wood roof tiles. The house has the square base, with a fire place in the center. Walls are made of stone, and have small windows. In the village there are 50 houses and only about 20 are inhabited.

The village has its own graveyard and smaller group of ancient stecci - medieval tombstones (from Medieval Bosnia). Access to the village is impossible from the first snows in December until late April, sometimes even later.

After Lukomir we will show you two more attractions.

Between Bjelašnica and Visočica mountain is Rakitnica canyon. Lukomir is situated at the edge of the canyon and from the village the canyon drops 800 meters. Canyon views are remarkable.

You will be able to meet villagers and hear about their fascinating lifestyles. It is an oportunity to find out firsthand from the villagers how they live on this beautiful but harsh mountain.

At the end off the tour you can see or purchase local handicraft.

NOTICE: For all visitors we can arrange also overnight stays in Lukomir and a circular hike around Lukomir for those of you interested in experiencing village life, seeing several villages and the Rakitnica canyon.
